A hedge can have very different functions: it can provide decoration or shade, separate property and protect from prying eyes or the wind. However, whether your hedge serves as an ornamental shrub or a natural windbreak, it requires maintenance and, if you want to do it more effectively, quickly and with less effort, you need a dedicated tool: a hedgetrimmer. But which hedgetrimmer?

Which type of hedgetrimmer is most suitable?

Is an electric, battery-powered or petrol engine hedgetrimmer preferable? That is the dilemma. Whether you are an amateur or professional gardener, the first thing you need to do when deciding on the best solution for your needs is to evaluate the type of work that you usually do.

In addition, consider the environment you work in: are you trimming hedges in your own garden? Are you pruning dense and compact vegetation in countryside, undergrowth or woodland? Or are you responsible for tending public greens?

For every type of work and environment there is an ideal hedgetrimmer. If you limit yourself to tending small hedges, opt for an electric or battery-powered hedgetrimmer. If instead you have to contend with thick and dense vegetation, better go for a professional petrol engine hedgetrimmer.

Electric hedgetrimmers

Perfect for ornamental cutting or pruning work on small-diameter branches in domestic gardens, the electric hedgetrimmer requires a nearby power outlet. Electric hedgetrimmers are compact, lightweight and manoeuvrable. One example is the Oleo-Mac HC 605 E, which has a 0.60 kW power output, 57 cm double blade and weighs only 3.6 kg.

Use it for low-density, medium-sized hedges, on branches up to 15 mm thick: in terms of performance, electric hedgetrimmers hold their own against petrol engine models with the same power rating, besides having the advantage of being quiet running. They are therefore ideal if your garden is in a residential area.

While shaping your hedge, be sure to keep the power cord of your electric hedgetrimmer out of the way by draping it over your shoulder.

Professional petrol engine hedgetrimmers

Petrol engine hedgetrimmers are a powerful tool, suitable even for prolonged maintenance work on tough, thick plants in the garden, countryside or undergrowth. They are definitely indispensable for professionals who look after urban parks and public spaces.

A new model of professional petrol engine hedgetrimmer from Oleo-Mac is the HC 247 P, combining a power output of 0.75 kW with a 75 cm double steel blade: just a few passes is it all it will take you to instantly achieve a tidy green finish.

Alongside the HC 247 P there are two more new professional petrol engine hedgetrimmers: the HC 246 P and HCS 247 P. We refer to them in this article about new releases in the Oleo-Mac catalogue.

Battery-powered hedgetrimmers

With a battery-powered hedgetrimmer, you can work easily and with freedom of movement even in large gardens, without needing to have an electrical outlet nearby and without power cords, noise or exhaust gases. In terms of cutting performance, they are a good compromise between an electric hedgetrimmer and a petrol engine model.

Among the battery-powered hedgetrimmers in the Oleo-Mac catalogue is the new model HCi 45, which is provided in a kit with 2.5 Ah battery and battery charger. It has a power output of 0.34 kW and a 45 cm long, high-quality laser-treated double blade, for a total weight of only 3.7 kg, battery included.

With the supplied battery you get 60 minutes’ continuous working time, or 45 minutes in the case of intensive jobs. Working autonomy is doubled with the 5 Ah battery, which gives you up to 2 hours’ continuous operation.
